Twitter Spam (should it be called "Twam" or "Spitter")
I decided recently that I better become an expert on Twitter. I admit I'm still a noob but learning fast. I understand how to promote yourself on Twitter, I'm quickly seeing how others are doing some promotion for themselves as well. I recently started following CNN and several news feeds through twitter and as a result gained a few followers myself.
These new followers all had something in common they were young cute girls who were really interested in having me check them out. This is not too original, I think I get same kind of spam in my email. The cool thing is the method by which they twam people.
Here are a couple of the ones in my profile:
(won't use their direct links because I really don't want to give them any benefit)
-
http://twitter.com/cindy_madison
Here is what they do. They first use a picture a young pretty girl, I imagine this is perfect lure for geeks - I mean "guys"- like me. Their full name are always used thus adding a bit of credibility to them. Their tweets all take the same format. 4-5 real tweets with some nice funny expression or common sense tip like "less sugar = better health", then 1 pitch tweet like teeth whitening products.
I imagine this type of twam would be easy to create. You would just need to have a script run on major twitterers that tracks new followers. Then anytime a new follower joins a major twitterer it automatically follows them. In case case of CNN any new followers could be people like me who are inexperienced with Twitter and more likely to watch who is watching me. Or as they say in Twitter speak follow the follower.
I imagine it would be hard for twitter to crack down on twammers because it is all so easy to replicate. Sure you could shut down one or two but 10 more will come to replace them.
By the way, anyone need beautiful white teeth? ;)
