Twitter Marketing 101 - The Power of Twitter

I've been a SEO consultant and expert for the past 10+ years. I've become fairly narrow in my focus and didn't until recently see much value in Twitter and other social media. I mainly focused on optimizing web sites' content and building links for them. However, I had one client that seemed stuck just out of the top 10 for their targeted keywords. Then they ended up using someone else to build links and the other person used social media links and they were top 10 within a month. I was amazed and felt slightly embarrassed that I failed to achieve the same results. I decided to learn everything I could about social marketing, which lead me to Twitter. At first I couldn't understand the appeal for Twitter, how a 140 char post could be so powerful, and why it was so popular. After having spent many hours researching and unraveling the mystery of Twitter, I realized there are many cool things about it. If you follow the right people you can learn some cool things before even it get reported on the news. But the thing I found compelling was how to use it to market oneself. Generally when you follow someone they end up following you back. You can search for people with similar interests and basically create legion of like minded followers. Now you can pitch your followers with your cool marketing ideas because they are following you, your post ends up on their pages. If they have followers those people might end up seeing your posts and potentially people might retweet your post making the potential reach huge. I'm still new to Twitter but I have built a following of almost 1000 people. Its simple math if I have 1000 followers and each of my followers has a 1000 followers, one tweet can reach about 1 million people. My goal is to use Twitter as a means to share ideas about Internet marketing and reach potential clients.
